How it works

One pouch, start to finish.

A typical first question from a small coffee roaster, and what comes back: an answer, the film it's made of, and a spec a printer can quote on.

Example question, typed on a phone

hi, we roast small batches and want to start selling 250g bags online. what pouch do we need?? budget is tight and we don't know any of the terms

Most first questions look like this. No sizes, no material names. That's fine: the answer does the translating.

What's inside the film

Three films, glued together. Each one has a job.

PET 12 µ · printed on the inside, so the ink can't rub off
AL 9 µ · blocks oxygen, light and aroma loss
LLDPE 90 µ · seals the pouch and touches the coffee

Cheaper option: swap foil for metallised PET. Fine if the coffee sells within about three months, not if it sits in a warehouse.

PackPunditassumed: whole bean, retail, 6–9 months

Go with a stand-up pouch in a foil laminate, with a one-way valve and a zip. Fresh coffee gives off CO₂ for days; the valve lets it out without letting oxygen in. Foil is what keeps it tasting right past month three.

Check before you order: ask for 10 blank samples and fill them yourself. Whole beans and ground coffee settle differently; the same 250 g can need a taller pouch.

Ask it about any of this.

From the film your pouch is made of to the code on its seal. If your printer can ask you about it, PackPundit can explain it.

Size a pouch before you call anyone.

Pick what you're packing and how much. You'll get a starting size from standard stand-up pouch dimensions.

This is where you start, not where you sign. Weight tells you what to print on the front; volume tells you what to order.

Most packaging decisions get made in a hurry: on a supplier's call, against a print deadline, by someone who was never trained for it.

PackPundit is the colleague you want in that moment. It knows what a gusset is, why foil cracks at the fold, and which question to ask before you pay the advance.

It won't replace your printer or a test lab. It will make you a far better customer for both.
